Pehli Si Muhabbat Episode 14 Review

This final episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat was disturbing and intense. When I titled my review "Trouble Ahead" last week, I had no idea the problem was going to be on this scale! This episode showed the final effects of everything we've seen all these weeks. The setbacks on all routes are more severe than ever, so tonight Rakhshi and Aslam's worst nightmares have come true. While we've seen similar scenarios in many other dramas, this episode differs from others in the fact that the writer took the time to establish the characters and their backstories so that I felt comfortable with everyone involved. In addition, Faiza Iftikhar always has a real story to tell, so she does not rush to show such scenarios. The intention is never to sensitize a certain scenario, but to adapt it if necessary. This makes a huge difference in my opinion, as many writers these days focus more on attention grabbing tactics than telling their stories!

The story went on convincingly all along, except that Akram had easy access to Aslam's cell phone. Aslam had so much to hide and yet his data was not password protected, which in my opinion was quite a stretch. Today's episode was full of strong emotions and all the tracks were linked as usual. It's a shame that most of the characters are trying to break free from their past, but it turns out to be a fruitless exercise. Zainab, Nargis and even Sikandar are prisoners of their past! They are constantly in situations that remind them of their past. The outstanding achievements of all actors involved made this episode an emotional roller coaster ride. All scenes were executed flawlessly, which really made all the scenarios on screen come alive.

The secret is out
Faiz Ullah's visit to Akram in the previous episode and everything that happened there caused Aslam to do something he might not otherwise have done. He wanted to prove to Faiz Ullah that his upbringing was imperfect and that Akram's family was not to blame. This meeting was so well played and written. The intentions and fears of these characters were as clear as daylight. After talking to Nargis, Aslam decided to meet Rakhshi, perhaps because he felt he had to try harder. The way Faiz Ullah broke in and Aslam asked him not to harm Rakhshi made this scene intense. The performances were consistently on time and these scenes were brilliantly staged. Sheheryar Munawar completely outdid himself in this episode; I felt every step for Aslam.

Faiz Ullah rightly felt betrayed, but it was a shame that he accused Nargis and beat his daughter. His ego was hurt more than anything. Nargis has always feared being held responsible for the relationship between Rakhshi and Aslam and now we know why! Even after trying so hard to avoid such a situation, she was in the midst of complete disaster. It was nice to see that Rakhshi had the courage to protect Nargis. Nargis also did everything to understand Faiz Ullah, but obviously she wasn't listening. This was a repeat of everything that happened to Zainab. The beating rakhshi received in defense of Nargis after a few lines was proof enough that Faiz Ullah would not support her if she told him that she was in love with Aslam. Sikandar turns out to be a hideous character; He plays and hasn't thought twice about beating Aslam that hard. I'm waiting for the moment when Zainab may have to step in to stop him.

Zainab's track was significant the whole time. Show what the future holds for Rakhshi! Also, the kind of emotional blackmail that led to Zainab's wedding is pretty much the same as Faiz Ullah's mentality at the moment. Zainab's mother hasn't even tried to understand her feelings as her daughter and Faiz Ullah also expects Rakhshi to be grateful to her for letting her live! Clearly, it is much more important for these parents to keep up appearances than to keep an eye on their daughters and make sure they can make choices that will lead to their happiness. Those dialogues and situations reminded me of one of Zainab's dialogues from the past when she told her mother that she couldn't see her scars on her soul! Nargis said something similar today when she asked Faiz Ullah if Rakhshi was okay. So much is expected of these daughters, but little is thought about what they want.

Final comments
This powerful episode of Pehli Si Mohabbat did full justice to the romance of Aslam and Rakhshi, while intelligently raising many legitimate questions. It showed all perspectives; how young people fall in love, why parents force them to marry people of their choice and the important role that social pressures play in everyone's life. Faiz Ullah and Zainab's mother have been so focused on gaining the consent of others that they don't even try to see things from their children's perspective. Aslam is the same; He is constantly seeking approval from society at large, following the list of pros and cons! Do parents raise their children so that one day they can make them proud by sacrificing their happiness to get a moral certificate from society? Pehli Si Mohabbat makes it really clear that you can't please everyone and sometimes try to make people you say you love and protect unhappy. This episode was one of the best so far. The services were always excellent; Sheheryar Munawar, HSY, Rabia Butt, Maya Ali and Shabbir Jan in particular performed brilliantly. The preview of the next episode was just as intense. Can't wait to see what next team Pehli Si Mohabbat has in store!
